Phosphorus pentoxide is white amorphous powder or hexagonal crystal. It is very easy to absorb moisture, soluble in water, releasing a lot of heat, forming metaphosphoric acid first, then orthophosphate.

Phosphorus pentoxide is used as desiccant of gas and liquid, dehydrating agent of organic synthesis, antistatic agent of polyester resin, refining agent of medicine and sugar. It is the raw material for preparing high purity phosphoric acid, phosphate, phosphide and phosphate ester. Phosphorus pentoxide, also known as phosphoanhydrides, can easily absorb water and react violently with water, which gives off 68 kcal of heat per mole of reaction. 

Phosphorus pentoxide is a common raw material and reagent in the chemical industry. It is widely used in medicine, coating assistant, printing and dyeing assistant, antistatic agent, chemical industry and other industries. It is mainly used in the manufacture of high-purity phosphoric acid, gas and liquid desiccant, organic synthetic dehydrating agent, and the preparation of organic phosphoric acid.

Storage:

Corrosive substances. Packing method: 

(Ⅱ) category. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances dry. Keep away from water, metals, alkali and flammable substances. Keep containers tightly closed Handle with care. Avoid moisture. Accidental Release Measures: Neutralize the spills with a mixed solution of sodium bicarbonate and calcium hydroxide. Wear full protective gear. 

 

Application

It dehydrates amides to nitriles. The solid reacts with water violently to produce phosphoric acid. 

It is used as a strong dehydrating agent, capable even of dehydrating concentrated sulphuric acid into sulphur trioxide.  End applications include manufacture of phosphorus compounds.
